You gotta make this. Mr. B’s Bistro BBQ Shrimp

Mr. B’s is a fabulous restaurant in New Orleans, and the recipe is one of their house favorites. It’s not BBQ in the traditional sense of the word, but is so rich and delicious. Like their site says, don’t be afraid of the amount of butter. I promise you won’t be sorry.

Just don’t forget an extra stack of napkins, it gets a little messy peeling the shrimp!

I included the link to the original recipe earlier, but I’m also including the recipe below too in case they ever take the recipe down. It’s that awesome.

  • 16 jumbo shrimp (12 per pound, about 1 1/2 pounds), with heads and unpeeled
  • 1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (about 2 lemons)
  • 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons cracked black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons Creole seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • French bread as accompaniment

In a large skillet combine shrimp, Worcestershire, lemon juice, black peppers, Creole seasoning, and garlic and cook over moderately high heat until shrimp turn pink, about 1 minute on each side. Reduce heat to moderate and stir in butter, a few cubes at a time, stirring constantly and adding more only when butter is melted. Remove skillet from heat. Place shrimp in a bowl and pour sauce over top. Serve with French bread for dipping.

Yield: 4 appetizers or 2 entrees

For Taylor and I we don’t usually do anything big for Valentine’s Day. I like to exchange cards, but sometimes we forget. Sometimes we’ll do small gifts, sometimes not. We always go out to dinner somewhere.

A couple days ago, Taylor asked, “Do you already have a card for me?” I coyly smiled back at him*, so of course he was like “WHAT? When did you have time to get me a card?!” So I told him that I have been out shopping alone in the past few weeks.

So yesterday a little before 5, I remembered that I had to go to the hospital after work to do crafts and give Valentine’s Day goodies to the kids in the pediatric unit. Since we carpool, I joked with him that my hour at the hospital would give him time to go get me a card.

When I got in the car after work he handed me a campus mail envelope. See, we also work at the same place, so on occasion someone will send something meant for him to my box or vice versa. So I wasn’t terribly surprised, and started to open the envelope to see what it was.

He tricked me. It wasn’t actually something sent to the wrong address. He made me a card at work. It apparently took several drafts to get the alignment right, but it was so sweet.

Inside he wrote an incredibly thoughtful message about how he loves how much we laugh and enjoy each others company and that he wishes more people had relationships like ours. It was very touching.

After my hour at the hospital passing out funfetti cupcakes, crafts, pizza and goodie bags to the kids, we enjoyed dinner at Freebird’s Burritos and then spent the rest of the evening watching How I Met Your Mother. It was pretty much exactly the same as every other night. Right before bed, I remembered I brought home a few pink frosting-ed, heart sprinkled cupcakes, so we ate them and called it a night. We’ll probably eat a fancier dinner this weekend. But yesterday was absolutely perfect and wonderful!

*Of course I just picked up a card yesterday afternoon! Taylor hasn’t figured out yet that even if you wait until the last minute, you don’t have to tell on yourself! I had already picked up a pair of boxer shorts with a candy heart design on them. In his card I listed just a few reasons why I love him including the fact that when we do the dishes together, he almost always pinches my butt with the tongs. Don’t tell him I told you! 🙂 Also, don’t worry if I ever cook for you, I promise they are properly cleaned after.
