On Christmas Eve, I asked my mom if we could look through her jewelry boxes at some of her jewelry, and she kindly obliged.
So for probably two hours, my mom, sister and I got a kick out of looking at all my mom’s stuff. From the fancy to the ridiculous. It was so fun! Want to see how much fun it was?
My mom had spectacular taste in HUGE costume jewelry back in the early 90s. This is just a small sampling.
Swirly AND clip on! Also comes in a darker purple version.
My sister is much better at posing than I am. Hand painted baby!
Hello rainbow!
Her modeling style is more ambivalent. “What, I didn’t even know you were there taking a picture of me and these awesome earrings.”
Mine on the other hand is more aware/awkward.”Oh hi, let me tilt my head just so. I want you to be able to see the earrings, not my double chin.”
Look, these are so huge they actually have their own shadow.
Mom was such a good sport about it all and even got in on some of the modeling.
After all the fun, and being the good daughter I am, I brought home some of her old silver stuff and polished it up for her. Here’s just a sample. (The pictures are kinda crappy, but you can definitely see a big difference!)
We also went through some of my memaw’s old costume jewelry. When she was alive, people would always ask her if her rings were real. She’s always tell them yes. And of course, they are real rings!
After she died, I brought some things to a jeweler to be sized for my mom, and when I went to pick the things up, the jeweler very quietly brought me aside. “You know this big stone in the middle isn’t real, right?” I laughed a little bit, and said, “Yes, I know. Thank you though.”
Anyway, I’d really recommend getting together with your mom (or grandma or aunts or any other family members) and having her go through her jewelry box. She’ll have plenty of stories to tell about everything, and you’ll probably recognize some of the pieces from when you were growing up. Even Taylor saw how much fun we were having and asked his mom to go through her jewelry box with me sometime.
And in case you are dying to own any of those earrings, let me know. I currently have them (and many more) in my possession. We could strike a deal. π
This. is. fabulous.
I think my favorite shot is the one of your sister wearing the circle / bigger circle / triangle earrings.
That is a pretty fabulous shot. I’ll reserve those earrings for you and a future Crappy Day Present.
This is awesome. I totally should have done this with my sisters before my mom got rid of all her older jewelry.
It’s not too late. There will probably still be some gems.
Good Lord! Could I look any worse? Haha. Anyway, I’ve located some more small boxes that have stuff in them for us to go through. (And I had outfits that matched all those colorful earrings. Not sure I should really admit to that though.)
You didn’t look bad. I can’t wait to see more. I also remember some of the outfits that matched. Do I remember a rainbow striped dress?
I wonder if my mom still has all her early-90s earrings! It would be so fun to go through them.
For some reason, the earrings in the third picture are really reminding me of a Mockingjay. (Have you read those books?)
Please do. I would love to see some of the artifacts.
And those earrings do kind of remind me of a mockingjay now that I look back at it.
Funny!
If Swistle gets the circle circle triangle earrings, I want the palm tree ones!
Your wish is my command. π
Making memories I bet your mom had the most fun out of all of you. You8 two were stinkers as little kids but it is fun watching you grow up into pretty good women.
Thanks Don. I thought it might be you. And we weren’t stinkers! You must have us confused with someone else.
Sorry that was me forgot to fill in name
Anyone is welcome to any of the earrings but they have to take a picture once they get them. π
(And I DO remember the rainbow dress {shudder})
THIS IS SO GREAT. i love that your mom also had matching outfits for all these!! next we’re going to need some photographic evidence of the whole looks, put together π
Um, Alice, NO!!! We DO NOT need photographic evidence LOL!!!!
Hahah! Sorry Alice, gotta let mom trump you on this one. π At least you get to see the jewelry, use your imagination on the rest.
I love double chins and adding yours to my collection:)
